The Los Angeles Angels salvaged their series against the Toronto Blue Jays by rallying for a 3-2 win in 10 innings on Sunday. Hunter Renfroe delivered the game-winning, two-run home run in extra innings that snapped the team’s 0-for-27 skid with runners in scoring position.

In doing so, the Angels improved to 4-2 on their current road trip and remain within four games of the Blue Jays for the third American League Wild Card spot.

Manager Phil Nevin could not overstate the importance of his team stealing a win from the Blue Jays, via Sam Blum of The Athletic:

“We say they’re all important. … But to say this one was needed right now is an understatement,” said a relieved Angels manager Phil Nevin after his team beat the Blue Jays 3-2.

Renfroe, who provided the heroics, believes the Angels will make a big run once they get back to full health:

“It was huge,” Renfroe said of the win. “As many games as we can pull off, when we get our guys back, that’s going to be great for us. We’re going to make a huge run.”

Carlos Estévez, who was credited with the win after recording six outs in the series finale, also reiterated the significance of the Angels not being swept:

“Everyone knows this is a good team,” said Angels closer Carlos Estévez, who recorded six outs to seal the win. “And we’re in the race for the wild card. Knowing that we could cut down on the lead that those guys have on us, it’s really big. Knowing how many good series we’re going to be playing in and out until the end of the year, every game is really important.

“But this one was a little bit more important.”

With their victory over the Blue Jays, the Angels have now gone 10-5 since the All-Star break. They will look to carry that momentum into a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves, which begins on Monday at Truist Park.

Angels acquire C.J. Cron & Randal Grichuk from Rockies

Four days after acquiring Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo López from the Chicago White Sox, the Angels reportedly have completed a trade with the Colorado Rockies for C.J. Cron and Randal Grichuk.
