Mike Trout recorded his first four-hit game in more than five years, while Jorge Soler and Jo Adell each homered as the Los Angeles Angels defeated the San Francisco Giants 4-3 on Sunday to avoid a three-game series sweep.
Trout reached base in all four of his plate appearances and continued climbing the Angels’ all-time record books. José Soriano delivered five effective innings, and Mitch Farris earned the first save of his major league career as Los Angeles snapped a three-game losing streak.
The victory prevented San Francisco from completing the sweep and ended the Giants’ four-game home winning streak.
Trout Delivers Vintage Performance
Trout turned in one of his best offensive games of the season, finishing 4 for 4 with a double and three singles.
It marked his first four-hit game since April 26, 2021, and the 21st four-hit performance of his career. The outing also raised his batting average to .247.
The veteran outfielder reached two significant franchise milestones during the game. His 340th career double moved him past Tim Salmon into second place on the Angels’ all-time doubles list, trailing only Garrett Anderson.
Trout also surpassed Salmon on the club’s career singles list. He now has 1,014 singles, ranking fourth in franchise history behind Anderson, Darin Erstad and Brian Downing.
His performance set the tone for an Angels offense that built an early lead and held on late.
Early Power Provides Cushion
Los Angeles wasted little time putting pressure on Giants starter Carson Whisenhunt.
Jorge Soler opened the game with a leadoff home run, giving the Angels an immediate 1-0 advantage.
The visitors added three more runs in the fourth inning. Nolan Schanuel worked a walk before Jo Adell crushed a 446-foot home run, extending the lead to 4-0.
Whisenhunt, recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to make the start, struck out seven batters over five innings but allowed four runs before exiting.
The early offense proved enough for the Angels’ pitching staff to protect the lead.
Soriano Controls Giants
José Soriano delivered another solid outing for Los Angeles.
The right-hander allowed one unearned run across five innings while giving up three hits, walking three and striking out five. He improved to 9-6 on the season by keeping San Francisco’s lineup under control despite issuing a few free passes.
Soriano worked efficiently through the middle innings, allowing the Angels to maintain their comfortable advantage before turning the game over to the bullpen.
Giants Rally Falls Short
San Francisco mounted a late push after being held in check for much of the afternoon.
Luis Arraez drove in the Giants’ first run with a groundout in the fifth inning before delivering a two-run double during the ninth to cut the deficit to one run.
Drew Cavanaugh also contributed offensively, finishing 2 for 2 while drawing two walks to reach base four times.
The Giants threatened to erase the Angels’ lead in the final inning, but Los Angeles’ bullpen managed to close out the game.
Farris Records First Save
Mitch Farris secured the victory by recording the final two outs of the game.
The right-hander earned the first save of his major league career after entering during San Francisco’s ninth-inning rally and preventing the tying run from scoring.
The Angels’ bullpen successfully preserved Soriano’s strong start despite the late pressure from the Giants.
For San Francisco, the loss ended a four-game home winning streak and left the club as the only team in Major League Baseball without a series sweep of at least three games this season.
The win gave the Angels a positive finish to their road trip and halted a three-game losing streak with contributions from both established veterans and key members of the pitching staff.

The Angels returned home to open a three-game series against the Houston Astros on Tuesday. Los Angeles was scheduled to start right-hander Walbert Ureña, who entered with a 6-7 record and a 2.78 ERA, while Houston had not announced a starting pitcher.
