Angel Martinez opened the game with a leadoff home run and rookie left-hander Parker Messick continued his strong start to the season as the Cleveland Guardians defeated the Los Angeles Angels 4-2 on Wednesday afternoon at Progressive Field.

The win completed a three-game sweep for Cleveland and continued the club’s long stretch of success against the Angels at home. The Guardians have dominated the matchup in Cleveland for more than a decade and once again controlled the series through strong pitching and timely offense.

Los Angeles continued to struggle away from home. The Angels have now lost 11 of their last 12 road games and remain unable to generate consistent momentum during a difficult stretch of the season.

Martinez Sets Tone Immediately

Angel Martinez wasted little time putting Cleveland ahead. Batting leadoff in place of the resting Steven Kwan, Martinez connected on the fourth pitch of the game from Angels starter Reid Detmers and drove it over the wall for a home run.

The blast marked the first leadoff homer of Martinez’s career and continued a productive series for the young outfielder. He also homered during Tuesday’s win and nearly added another long ball later in that game.

Manager Stephen Vogt used Martinez at the top of the order as Cleveland looked for more offensive production while Kwan works through a difficult stretch at the plate. Martinez responded immediately and provided an early spark.

The Guardians continued building pressure later in the first inning. David Fry added an RBI groundout that extended the lead to 2-0 before the Angels could settle into the game.

Messick Continues Strong Rookie Season

Parker Messick delivered another composed outing for Cleveland. The rookie left-hander allowed two runs and four hits across 6 2/3 innings while improving his record to 5-1.

Messick faced early control issues and walked two batters during the opening innings, but he settled quickly and limited the Angels’ offense for the remainder of his appearance.

The rookie relied on pitch movement and location rather than overpowering velocity. He forced weak contact consistently and avoided extended trouble after the fifth inning.

Cleveland’s bullpen finished the game efficiently. Eric Sabrowski struck out all three hitters he faced in the eighth inning, and closer Cade Smith matched that performance in the ninth to earn his 13th save of the season.

The Guardians pitching staff has become one of the team’s strongest assets during the opening months of the season. Cleveland continues to receive reliable innings from both young starters and late-game relievers.

Neto Provides Angels’ Offense

Zach Neto accounted for most of the Angels’ offense with a two-run home run in the fifth inning. The shortstop entered the game in a slump and moved from the leadoff spot down to sixth in the batting order.

The adjustment appeared to help temporarily. After Oswald Peraza singled, Neto drove a pitch into the seats for his seventh home run of the season, cutting Cleveland’s lead to 3-2.

The Angels briefly gained momentum after the homer, but they failed to create additional scoring opportunities against Messick and the Cleveland bullpen.

Los Angeles managed only four hits in the game and struggled again to produce offense consistently on the road.

Guardians Add Insurance Run

Cleveland regained breathing room in the sixth inning when Daniel Schneemann delivered an RBI single. The hit extended the lead to 4-2 and gave the bullpen additional margin entering the final innings.

Earlier in the game, rookie Chase DeLauter also contributed with a sacrifice fly in the third inning. The Guardians did not overwhelm the Angels offensively, but they consistently converted opportunities with runners in scoring position.

That efficiency has helped Cleveland maintain momentum throughout the series. The lineup continues to produce balanced offense without relying heavily on one player.

Angels Continue Road Struggles

The Angels’ recent road form remains one of the team’s biggest concerns. Defensive inconsistency, limited run production and uneven pitching performances have contributed to their extended struggles away from Anaheim.

Reid Detmers allowed three runs and could not recover fully after Martinez’s early homer. The left-hander battled through several innings but lacked command during important situations.

Los Angeles also struggled to generate sustained pressure against Cleveland’s relievers. The lineup produced only one major scoring threat after Neto’s homer.

The Angels now head home searching for a reset after another difficult series.

Cleveland Maintains Strong Position

The Guardians continue to build confidence through steady performances on both sides of the field. Their success at Progressive Field has become one of the season’s defining trends, particularly against teams outside the division.

Young players such as Martinez, Messick, and DeLauter continue to contribute meaningful innings and at-bats, strengthening Cleveland’s depth as the season progresses.

The team has also benefited from disciplined bullpen work and cleaner defensive execution during recent weeks.

Up Next

The Angels will return home after an off day to open a three-game series against the Dodgers. Right-hander Jack Kochanowicz is expected to start the opener.

Cleveland remains at home and begins a three-game series against Cincinnati on Friday. Right-hander Tanner Bibee is scheduled to take the mound as he looks for his first win of the season.

The Guardians leave the series with another complete performance and continued momentum. The Angels head home still searching for answers during one of the roughest stretches of their season.
