As the Los Angeles Angels head into one of the most pivotal offseason’s in team history, the direction of the franchise is on the slippery slope of where to head.

The impending free agency of Shohei Ohtani looms largest, and because of how much he’s meant to the organization since joining the team, much of their plans hinge on his decision. The two-way superstar is en route to his second career Most Valuable Player Award, and with a record-setting contract in the works, general manager Perry Minasian has a lot to consider.

If Ohtani does leave, the Angels could opt to finally move their other star talent in Mike Trout. The deal could prove to be a tough one, but if possible, latest odds hint there’s something to a move towards Los Angeles.

BetOnline.ag lists the Los Angeles Dodgers as the betting favorites to land Trout if the Angels change gears towards a completely new future, and because of all the money attached, would require a huge shift of assets.

Although Trout has dealt with a myriad of injuries in recent years, he’s still capable of being the all world center fielder and as good as advertised. Without much of a farm system, and huge money tied into Trout, Anthony Rendon and a decent contract for Tyler Anderson, the Angels could clean house and completely rebuild.

The Dodgers have both the payroll flexibility, and a need for more thump in their lineup, but a move of this stature would require some serious leg work and negotiation among both teams.

Darin Erstad listed as potential candidate for Angels manager spot

As the Angels search for a new manager, they are believed to be seeking a veteran presence to lead their young roster. Among the candidates so far is former New York Mets skipper Buck Showalter, who has managed in parts of 22 big league seasons.

Another possible option for the Angels’ managerial opening is Darin Erstad.

Erstad most recently served as the head coach of the University of Nebraska baseball team from 2011-2019. He was rumored to be a candidate for the Dodgers’ managerial search in 2015 before the organization hired Dave Roberts.
