Angels’ Phil Nevin: We’re Seeing ‘A Different’ Luis Rengifo
MLB: Baltimore Orioles at Los Angeles Angels

Los Angeles Angels utility man Luis Rengifo was recently named the American League Player of the Week, mainly for his explosion in both plate discipline and continued ability to get on base in multiple ways.

Since Aug. 22, Rengifo has posted a 234 wRC+ with a .439/.469/.789 slash. His strikeout rate plummeted to a miniscule 12.5%, while clubbing five home runs, 14 RBI, with 9 runs scored.

In that span he’s logged time at shortstop, second base, right field and center field. His expanded role in manager Phil Nevin’s offense is a continuation of many things the Angels saw in 2022, per Jeff Fletcher of the O.C. Register:

“I know he played well at the end of last season, but this is kind of a different Luis we’re seeing now,” Nevin said. “A little more power, more walks, not as much chase, swinging at the right pitches. So I think we’ve done a great job with him.”

Rengifo’s second half success is a lot like his second half from last year, but he’s taken a huge leap forward. His splits against left-handed pitchers are among the best in baseball, which makes him a very intriguing piece.

The Angels would be wise to keep finding ways for Rengifo, as the need for plus-offensive utility players is always a priority in Major League Baseball. With him having some solid value because of team control, the 26-year-old could be moved in a deal which would garner a solid return.

Luis Rengifo has stepped up his power game

With 16 home runs on the season, Rengifo is just one shy from his total from 2022. Since Aug. 27, he’s hit five home runs, including a two homer night against the Philadelphia Phillies to wrap up August.

On Wednesday, he hit a two-run homer in the Angels 10-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles, adding another hit in a 2-4 effort. His 13th multi-hit performance since August 1.
