Highly regarded Los Angeles Angels pitching prospect Reid Detmers was ranked No. 49 on Kiley McDaniel’s Top 100 list for the 2022 season. He previously received recognition as the No. 19 and No. 23 prospect in all of baseball by Keith Law and MLB Pipeline, respectively.
Detmers was selected out of Louisville with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft and has quickly risen through the Angels’ farm system. The left-hander began his first professional season with Double-A Rocket City and pitched to a 2-4 record with a 3.50 ERA and 1.17 WHIP with 97 strikeouts against 18 walks in 54 innings (12 starts).
Detmers received a promotion to Triple-A Salt Lake on July 24 and promptly allowed just three hits over six scoreless innings with nine strikeouts. He would make his big league debut with the Angels on Aug. 1, yielding six runs on six hits in 4.1 innings against the Oakland Athletics.
Detmers struggled in five starts at the Major League level as he went just 1-3 with a 7.40 ERA, 6.36 FIP and 1.79 WHIP with 19 strikeouts against 11 walks. The 22-year-old’s development was stunted a bit as he missed over a month due to a bout with COVID-19.
Detmers will now look to make the jump in his second big league season. He figures to compete for a spot in the Angels’ Opening Day starting rotation in Spring Training, and at the very least, provides quality depth should an injury occur.
McDaniel gave Detmers a 55-60 grade for his command (20-80 scale) and believes he will develop into a crafty mid-rotation starter.
Sam Bauchman not included in Kiley McDaniel’s Top 100 rankings
While Detmers earned a spot in Kiley McDaniel’s Top 100 list for the 2022 season, fellow Angels prospect Sam Bauchman did not make the cut. The right-hander was, however, ranked the No. 60 and No. 87 prospect in all of baseball by Law and MLB Network, respectively.
Detmers and Bauchman are part of an Angels farm system that recently was ranked No. 23 for the 2022 season by Law.
