The Los Angeles Angels dropped their 14th consecutive game on Thursday with a 1-0 loss to the Boston Red Sox. The club fell to 27-31 and sat 9.5 games behind the first-place Houston Astros in the American League West.

On May 15, the Angels were 11 games over .500 and looked poised to return to the postseason for the first time since 2014.

Although they broke their losing streak with a win on Thursday over the Red Sox, they first created some MLB history with their losing streak.

According to Elias Sports, the Angels became the third team in history to be 10 or more games over .500 and have a losing streak of 10 or more games to fall below .500, joining the 1978 Oakland Athletics and 1970 Chicago Cubs.

If the Angels bounce back to make the playoffs, their current losing streak would be the longest in MLB history for a team that advances to October. The 2017 L.A. Dodgers lost 11 games in a row and took the Astros to seven games in the World Series.

As it currently stands, the Angels are 3.5 games out of a Wild Card spot in the AL. Despite their losses, multiple projection systems have the Angels as a playoff team in some capacity.

However, their losses have led to some executives around the league questioning the projections and sharing their skepticism.

Minasian: ‘It was time for a new voice’ leading the Angels

After their losing streak extended to 12 games, the Angels and general manager Perry Minasian opted to fire manager Joe Maddon and name third base coach Phil Nevin as interim manager for the remainder of the season.

The firing came as a surprise despite Maddon being in the last year of his contract. Though, it was clear the organization had no current plans to give him an extension.

Minasian believed his decision, although difficult, was needed to change the direction of the team. Since the move, L.A. has dropped two additional games.
