Los Angeles Angels infielder Luis Rengifo and former left fielder Brandon Marsh were named among the American League finalists for the 2022 Rawlings Gold Glove Awards. Three finalists were selected at each defensive position in each league, with a new twist that allowed Rengifo to make the cut.
The Rawlings Gold Glove Award honors the best individual fielding performances at each position in the American League and National League.
For the first time, Rawlings included a Utility category, awarding players who excelled in multiple positions using their SABR-curated formula. Rengifo is a finalist in this category alongside New York Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu and Kansas City Royals/Toronto Blue Jays utilityman Whit Merrifield in the AL.
And although Marsh was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies at the trade deadline in exchange for catcher Logan O’Hoppe, he played enough games with the Angels this season to qualify, and there is no denying his place as one of the games’ best defensive outfielders.
Marsh tallied six defensive runs saved and eight outs above average in 593.2 innings in left with the Angels. And while advanced metrics look less favorably on Rengifo, he played at least 100 innings at three different positions, and even accrued 30 innings in the outfield in 2022.
There is a two-fold process to determining the eventual winners of each Gold Glove. 75% of the vote belongs to managers and coaches. Each team’s manager and up to six coaches on that staff vote from a pool of qualified players in their League and cannot vote for players from their own team.
The remaining 25% is given to the SABR Defensive Index stat, which was introduced in 2013. The Yankees, Cleveland Guardians, and Arizona Diamondbacks are tied for the most finalist selections, with five each.
The winners will be unveiled during a one-hour, special edition “Baseball Tonight” broadcast on ESPN Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2022, at 5 p.m. ET. The show will air on-field prior to game four of the MLB® World Series from the National League host ballpark.
