The Los Angeles Angels have worked to improve their farm system in recent years, and one prospect they have high hopes for is Ky Bush, who was selected in the second round of the 2021 MLB Draft.
Bush is the Angels’ No. 3 ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline, and he made his professional debut in 2021, appearing in five games for the High-A Tri City Dust Devils.
The southpaw then got his first extended look in 2022, making 21 starts for the Double-A Rocket City Trash Pandas. He went 7-4 with a 3.67 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 103 innings pitched.
Bush was expected to continue making strides this season but he missed most of Spring Training with an oblique injury and then injured his groin in April.
The 23-year-old is finally healthy and started throwing in extended Spring Training, per Jeff Fletcher of the Southern California News Group:
Left-hander Ky Bush, one of the Angels’ top pitching prospects, is again healthy and pitching in extended spring training. Bush missed much of spring training with an oblique injury and then he hurt his groin in April.
Bush will presumably stay in extended Spring Training until he builds back up and then could join Rocket City to begin his 2023 campaign. Depending on how he fares, he could also spend some time with the Triple-A Salt Lake Bees this year.
Bush likely won’t be a candidate to join the Angels until the 2024 season at the earliest.
Perry Minasian: Angels want to build a bullpen with arms ‘that we develop’
As the Angels shuffle their bullpen, general manager Perry Minasian said the team wants to build a group of homegrown arms as opposed to making free agent signings and trades.
Offseason acquisitions of Carlos Estévez and Matt Moore have been very solid additions, but Minasian hopes the likes of Sam Bachman, Ben Joyce and Chase Silseth are just as successful.
