Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Griffin Canning and right fielder Jo Adell have been named as finalists for the 2024 Rawlings Gold Glove Award at their respective positions. The Gold Glove Award recognizes the best defensive players at each of the nine positions, plus a utility spot, in each league for the season.
Winners and finalists are determined through two means. The first is a voting pool from the 30 MLB managers and up to six coaches per team. These managers and coaches are not allowed to vote for players on their own team, and this makes up 75% of the final voting tally.
The other 25% is purely based on the SABR Defensive Index. Winners for this year’s Gold Glove Awards are slated to be announced on ESPN’s Baseball Tonight on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 5:30 p.m. PT.
Canning is one of two Angels players represented on the Gold Glove finalist list for the American League. Canning won this award back in 2020 and is up against two starters from the Kansas City Royals in Seth Lugo and Cole Ragans. SABR has not released their full-season defensive index yet, but as of Aug. 11, Canning ranked third among AL pitchers behind Lugo and Chris Flexen.
Adell makes the cut as a first-time finalist in his first full-length MLB season. This is a drastic change for a player who struggled mightily in the outfield when he first was called up to the big leagues. But now, not only did he tally six defensive runs saved (DRS) on the year, he actually was the SABR Defensive Index leader among AL right-fielders as of Aug. 11.
The favorite right now, though, would have to be Wilyer Abreu of the Boston Red Sox, as he dazzled at the position in his rookie season with a league-leading 18 defensive runs saved and nine outfield assists to add to it.
