The Los Angeles Angels have had the star power with Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani and Anthony Rendon on their Major League roster in recent seasons. But the lack of wins is what has clouded their success, while also casting a lot of doubt in the ability of the front office.
Ownership bears a chunk of the blame, with Angels owner Arte Moreno seemingly unwilling to put the financial resources in place to build a prospect pool that rivals other clubs. But with a few exits in the front office including assistant general manager Alex Tamin, current general manager Perry Minasian remains in place.
As the franchise is on the verge of beginning a key offseason, Britt Ghiroli of The Athletic discussed in an appearance on Foul Territory, that the Angels might not be done with their front office framework:
“Perry Minasian might have someone put above him in Anaheim.”
This is a significant piece of information because of the direction the Angels could go. Ghiroli was discussing Kim Ng, former Miami Marlins general manager, and perhaps she could be a candidate for a higher-up role.
The Angels strong suit hasn’t been building an organization from the ground up, or even allocating the financial resources to grow a sustainably positive farm system. Ng was with the Marlins from 2021 through the 2023 season, and became the first woman GM in Major League Baseball history to lead a playoff team.
Placing another candidate above Minasian should be a good thing, because in order for the Angels to get back to their solid run of play in the 2000s, they’ll have to start with a strong foundation.
Darin Erstad among candidates for Angels managerial position
As the Angels search for a new manager, they are believed to be seeking a veteran presence to lead their young roster. Among the candidates so far is former New York Mets skipper Buck Showalter, who has managed in parts of 22 big league seasons.
Another possible option for the Angels’ managerial opening is Darin Erstad.
Erstad most recently served as the head coach of the University of Nebraska baseball team from 2011-2019. He was rumored to be a candidate for the Dodgers’ managerial search in 2015 before the organization hired Dave Roberts.
