The Los Angeles Angels placed Anthony Rendon on the 10-day injured list on Monday due to a bruised left wrist. No corresponding move was announced at the time, but the Angels did make another roster move on Tuesday.
The Angels are entrenched in the race for the American League West division and have shown some serious fight as of late, clawing their way up with some big-time performances against division opponents.
Much of their change in terms of their hitting with runners in scoring position has come through Anthony Rendon and his consistency with timely, productive swings. But his availability has been a consistent question mark.
He missed time earlier in the season with a groin issue, but after being hit on the left wrist by a pitch on Thursday, the Angels opted to make a roster move. Rendon hasn’t appeared in a game after suffering the injury against the Texas Rangers.
The 33-year-old has dealt with a number of injuries since joining the Angels on a seven-year, $245MM deal after the 2019 season, and this one is one of his most unfortunate. He’s posted a meager amount of power this season, slugging just seven extra-base hits in 164 plate appearances.
Manager Phil Nevin has praised his consistent professionalism and the need for the Angels to have him in the heart of the order due to his ability to drive runs in.
He’s been hit by six pitches so far this year, and given the number of games left to play, Rendon was on pace to set a new career-high, which is 12.
Angels select the contract of Kevin Padlo to replace Anthony Rendon
The Angeles on Tuesday selected the contract of infielder Kevin Padlo. To make room on the 40-man roster, José Suarez was moved to the 60-day IL.
Padlo will be making his MLB debut when he enters a game. The 26-year-old was hitting .266 with a .915 on-base plus slugging seven home runs, 25 RBI and six stolen bases across 124 at-bats for Triple-A Salt Lake and the Arizona League.
He is a career .244 hitter with a .796 OPS across 2,672 Minor League at-bats. Padlo has seen time at third base, first base, second base and left field.
