The Los Angeles Angels announced on Thursday that they have agreed to a two-year contract extension with general manager Perry Minasian that will keep him atop the Angels through the 2026 season.
Minasian took over the baseball decision-making for the Angels prior to the 2021 season. In his four seasons, the Angels have not had a winning record, and have at times looked to be among the worst organizations in the sport. But the last few months have brought about hope for the first time in a long while for the Angels.
The GM’s contract was set to expire at the end of the season, but he’ll now have a chance to infuse some more young and veteran talent around the core of Logan O’Hoppe, Zach Neto, Nolan Schanuel, Jose Soriano and more.
“Over the last four years, Perry and his baseball operations staff have begun to lay the foundation for a bright future of Angels baseball,” owner Arte Moreno said in a statement. “We have been impressed by the steps Perry has taken to infuse our Major League team with young and exciting talent while also revamping our player-development process.
“We believe this extension will allow him to continue the vision of building sustainable success throughout the Angels’ organization and deliver a championship for our fans.”
Arte Moreno has been criticized significantly in recent years, especially after reversing his decision to sell the team and remaining the owner of the franchise. However, Minasian may — for the first time — actually be building something intriguing.
“I am incredibly thankful to Arte and Carole Moreno for their continued trust and support,” Minasian said. “I would also like to thank John Carpino for the tremendous working relationship we have developed over the last four years and I look forward to continuing our plans of bringing the Angels back to being a consistent championship contender.”
What Minasian does with his newfound job security this offseason will be an interesting watch. The Angels likely don’t have the pieces in place to contend in 2025, but if Minasian plays his cards right, the team could be legitimately competitive in 2026.
