Francisco Alvarez delivered a game-tying home run and Ryne Stanek shut the door on a late threat, helping the New York Mets rally past the Los Angeles Angels 3-2 on Tuesday night for their second straight comeback victory in the series.
In his second game back from the minors, Alvarez launched a two-run homer in the fifth inning, erasing a 2-0 Angels lead. Brandon Nimmo followed with a go-ahead RBI single later in the inning, completing a three-run rally. That burst was enough to back Mets starter Frankie Montas, who earned his third consecutive win.
The Angels jumped ahead with a solo home run from Jorge Soler and an RBI double by Nolan Schanuel — who finished the night with a career-best four hits. Logan O’Hoppe added three hits, but Los Angeles couldn’t capitalize on several key opportunities.
One came in the first inning, when Juan Soto threw out Mike Trout at home plate, denying him his 999th career RBI. Another came in the fifth, after Schanuel’s double gave the Angels a 2-0 lead, and they had runners on second and third with one out. Montas struck out Trout, walked Taylor Ward, and retired Jo Adell on a deep fly to center to escape the jam.
Angels starter Kyle Hendricks (5-7) cruised through the first 4 2/3 innings, allowing only a soft single, before the Mets strung together four consecutive hits to take the lead. Brett Baty’s double set up Alvarez’s fourth home run of the season — his first at Citi Field.
Montas (3-1) went 5 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on eight hits while striking out six. Relievers Rico Garcia and Reed Garrett kept the Angels off the board in the middle innings before Stanek, for resting closer Edwin Díaz, sealed the win with his third save. He retired Trout on a soft popup to first to end the game with two Angels on base.
