Reid Detmers delivered eight scoreless innings and Nolan Schanuel drove in the game’s only run in the eighth as the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Kansas City Royals 1-0 on Saturday night.
Detmers allowed only two hits, issued no walks and struck out 11 in one of his strongest outings of the season. Ben Joyce completed the shutout with a hitless ninth as Los Angeles won for the fourth time in five games.
Schanuel finished 3-for-3 and accounted for half of the Angels’ six hits. His late RBI single brought home pinch-runner Jose Siri and finally broke a scoreless tie after both pitching staffs controlled the first seven innings.
Detmers Dominates Kansas City
Detmers gave the Angels exactly what they needed in a game that provided almost no margin for error.
The left-hander kept Kansas City scoreless for eight innings and consistently stayed ahead of the Royals lineup. He did not issue a walk and allowed only two hits.
Detmers also recorded 11 strikeouts, limiting Kansas City’s opportunities to build any sustained offensive pressure.
The performance earned Detmers his first win of the season at Angel Stadium. He improved to 4-8 overall.
With the Angels unable to score through seven innings, Detmers had to preserve the shutout throughout his outing. He did exactly that and handed the bullpen a 1-0 lead after Los Angeles finally broke through in the eighth.
Dobnak Matches Detmers Early
Kansas City starter Randy Dobnak kept pace with Detmers for much of the night.
Dobnak worked 5 2/3 scoreless innings and held Los Angeles to four hits. He struck out six before leaving with the game still tied.
The Angels had opportunities to reach base, but they could not produce the hit needed to take the lead against the Royals starter.
Schanuel was the most productive hitter in the Los Angeles lineup. His three-hit performance kept pressure on Kansas City’s pitching even as the rest of the offense struggled to generate runs.
The Royals bullpen initially maintained the shutout after Dobnak departed, sending the game into the eighth without a run on the scoreboard.
Siri’s Speed Sets Up Winning Run
Los Angeles finally created the decisive scoring opportunity against Nate Pearson in the eighth.
Wade Meckler drew a walk to begin the sequence, and the Angels brought in Siri as a pinch-runner.
Siri quickly changed the situation with his speed.
He stole second base, putting the potential go-ahead run in scoring position. Schanuel then delivered the hit Los Angeles had been waiting for all night.
His RBI single brought Siri home and gave the Angels a 1-0 lead.
The run was charged to Pearson, who fell to 2-1 with the loss.
For Schanuel, the hit completed a 3-for-3 night and provided the only offense Detmers and Joyce needed.
Joyce Protects One-Run Lead
After throwing eight innings, Detmers did not return for the ninth.
Instead, the Angels turned to Joyce to protect the narrow advantage.
Joyce retired Kansas City without allowing a hit, preserving the shutout and earning his second save of the season.
The scoreless inning completed a dominant night for the Los Angeles pitching staff.
Detmers and Joyce combined to hold Kansas City to two hits and no walks over nine innings. The Royals never found a way to turn their limited baserunners into runs.
The result gave Los Angeles another win during a productive stretch and improved the Angels to four victories in their last five games.
Schanuel Provides Offensive Spark
Although the game belonged largely to the pitchers, Schanuel delivered the biggest performance at the plate.
The Angels managed six hits as a team, and Schanuel collected three of them.
His first two hits did not lead to runs, but his final one came at the most important moment.
With Siri at second in the eighth, Schanuel produced the go-ahead single that ended seven-plus innings of scoreless baseball.
The Angels did not add any insurance runs, leaving Joyce to protect the smallest possible lead in the ninth.
Kansas City also received another hit from Jac Caglianone, who extended his hitting streak to 13 games. The Royals otherwise struggled to make contact against Detmers, who recorded 11 of his 24 outs by strikeout.
Angels Win Another Pitching Battle
Los Angeles needed a strong outing from Detmers because Dobnak and the Kansas City bullpen kept the Angels quiet for most of the night.
Detmers responded with eight innings without allowing a run. His command was especially effective, as he completed his outing without issuing a walk.
The Angels then combined timely hitting and aggressive baserunning to create the only run.
Meckler’s eighth-inning walk started the rally. Siri’s stolen base moved the potential winning run into scoring position, and Schanuel completed the sequence with his third hit of the game.
Joyce handled the rest.
The 1-0 result gave the Angels their fourth win in five games and provided Detmers with his first home win of the year.
