The Tampa Bay Rays received another strong outing from Shane McClanahan and timely contributions throughout the lineup to defeat the Los Angeles Angels 5-2 on Sunday at Tropicana Field.

Jonathan Aranda homered, the Rays capitalized on walks and scoring opportunities, and their bullpen protected a late lead as Tampa Bay closed out the series with a solid all-around performance. The win added to the Rays’ strong run of form and highlighted the consistency of both their pitching staff and offense.

For the Angels, the loss ended a difficult road trip on a disappointing note. Logan O’Hoppe provided much of the offense with two hits, including a home run, but Los Angeles struggled to generate enough scoring chances against McClanahan and Tampa Bay’s bullpen.

The Angels have now dropped another series as they continue searching for momentum heading into a return home.

Aranda Sets The Tone Early

Tampa Bay wasted little time getting on the scoreboard.

Leading off the bottom of the first inning, Jonathan Aranda launched a solo home run to give the Rays an immediate 1-0 lead. The blast continued Aranda’s productive season and provided an early boost for Tampa Bay’s offense.

The Angels responded in the second inning.

Jose Siri singled with two outs and moved to third when Logan O’Hoppe lined a double into scoring position. Siri later crossed the plate on a wild pitch from McClanahan, tying the game at 1-1.

Despite the brief setback, Tampa Bay quickly regained control.

Rays Capitalize In Third Inning

The decisive stretch came in the third inning when the Rays turned patience at the plate into runs.

Aranda and Richie Palacios opened the inning with consecutive walks. Junior Camerino followed with a single to load the bases and put immediate pressure on Angels starter Jack Kochanowicz.

Victor Mesa Jr. delivered an RBI single to restore Tampa Bay’s lead. Moments later, Cedric Mullins worked a bases-loaded walk, forcing home another run and extending the advantage to 3-1.

The Rays managed only one hit during the rally, but disciplined at-bats and quality plate appearances allowed them to capitalize on opportunities. Tampa Bay consistently forced Angels pitchers into difficult counts throughout the afternoon.

That approach gave McClanahan enough support to settle into his outing.

McClanahan Delivers Another Strong Start

McClanahan continued his strong season with another effective performance.

The left-hander allowed just one run on four hits across five innings. He struck out three batters and did not issue a walk, maintaining control throughout his outing.

The Angels put runners on base at times but rarely threatened to string together sustained offense. McClanahan worked efficiently and kept Los Angeles from generating any significant momentum.

His ability to avoid free passes proved especially important. While Tampa Bay’s offense benefited from walks, McClanahan consistently attacked the strike zone and forced Angels hitters to earn their way aboard.

The outing improved his season record to 6-2 and added another quality performance to an already impressive campaign.

O’Hoppe Keeps Angels Within Reach

The Angels briefly made things interesting late in the game.

O’Hoppe, one of Los Angeles’ most productive hitters this season, connected for a solo home run in the seventh inning. The blast cut Tampa Bay’s lead to 3-2 and gave the Angels hope of mounting a comeback.

The catcher finished with two hits and accounted for both Angels runs. His double in the second helped create the team’s first run, and his home run later trimmed the deficit to a single run.

However, Tampa Bay responded immediately.

The Rays manufactured two insurance runs in the bottom half of the seventh. Pinch-hitter Ben Williamson delivered an RBI single that scored a run and extended the lead. Williamson then stole second base to help create additional pressure.

After Taylor Walls worked a walk to load the bases, Yandy Díaz showed patience in a lengthy plate appearance and drew an eight-pitch walk. The free pass forced home another run and pushed the lead to 5-2.

Those insurance runs proved critical as Tampa Bay’s bullpen closed out the game.

Rays Bullpen Finishes The Job

After McClanahan exited, Tampa Bay’s relief corps handled the remaining innings effectively.

The bullpen limited Los Angeles’ opportunities and prevented the Angels from mounting another rally. Bryan Baker worked a scoreless ninth inning to record his 16th save of the season, continuing an impressive year at the back end of the bullpen.

The Rays’ pitching staff once again demonstrated its depth and versatility. From McClanahan’s steady start to the bullpen’s clean finish, Tampa Bay controlled the game from the mound.

Meanwhile, Kochanowicz struggled to find consistency for Los Angeles. The right-hander lasted only 2 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits while issuing four walks. His inability to work deep into the game placed additional pressure on the Angels bullpen early.

Rays Continue Strong Stretch

The victory highlighted several strengths that have fueled Tampa Bay’s success this season.

Aranda provided power at the top of the lineup. Camerino and Walls each contributed two hits. The offense remained patient and capitalized on scoring chances, while the pitching staff limited mistakes.

For the Angels, O’Hoppe’s performance offered one of the few bright spots. The club struggled to create offense beyond his contributions and could not overcome an early deficit.

Los Angeles now returns home looking to regroup after another challenging road series.
