Roki Sasaki delivered the best start of his young major league career, and Shohei Ohtani continued his recent offensive surge as the Los Angeles Dodgers rolled past the Los Angeles Angels 10-1 on Sunday night at Angel Stadium.
The Dodgers completed a three-game sweep in emphatic fashion, stretching their winning streak to five games while outscoring the Angels 31-3 across the Freeway Series. Sasaki controlled the game from the mound, Kyle Tucker drove in three runs, and Ohtani collected three hits against his former team.
For the Angels, the loss marked their sixth straight defeat and continued a difficult stretch against elite opponents. Los Angeles struggled to generate offense throughout the series and failed to keep pace with a Dodgers team firing on every level.
The matchup also highlighted the sharp contrast between the two clubs. The Dodgers looked deep, disciplined and efficient, while the Angels again battled inconsistency on the mound and at the plate.
Sasaki Finds Rhythm In Career-Best Outing
Sasaki entered the season carrying massive expectations after arriving in Major League Baseball with one of the most electric pitching profiles in the sport.
His rookie campaign, however, has been marked by injuries, inconsistency, and role adjustments. Sunday finally provided a glimpse of the pitcher the Dodgers believe can anchor their rotation for years.
The right-hander threw seven innings, allowed one run on four hits, and struck out eight without issuing a walk. He needed only 91 pitches to complete his outing and consistently attacked hitters with confidence.
Both the innings total and strikeout total marked career highs for Sasaki.
The Angels struggled to square up his fastball and splitter combination all night. Sasaki repeatedly worked ahead in counts and forced weak contact when hitters tried to attack early.
After enduring a rocky start to his major league career and later transitioning into a playoff bullpen role during the Dodgers’ championship run last season, Sasaki now appears more comfortable handling a regular starting role again.
The Dodgers have carefully managed his workload this season. Sunday’s outing suggested that patience may be paying off.
Dodgers Offense Delivers Early Separation
The Dodgers lineup gave Sasaki immediate support and steadily widened the margin as the game progressed.
Ohtani and Andy Pages delivered the key blows during a four-run fourth inning. Both lined two-run singles to break open the game and put the Angels in an early hole they never escaped.
Kyle Tucker added three hits and three RBI in another productive performance near the middle of the lineup. His ability to consistently reach base and drive in runs helped the Dodgers maintain offensive pressure throughout the series.
The Dodgers once again forced Angels pitchers into difficult counts and capitalized on mistakes over the plate.
Ohtani continued his strong rebound after a recent slump prompted the Dodgers to briefly give him two days away from hitting duties earlier in the week. The decision appears to have worked.
The four-time MVP finished with three singles Sunday and now has eight hits and eight RBI over his last four games.
Playing once again at Angel Stadium, where he spent the first part of his major league career, Ohtani looked fully locked in offensively throughout the weekend.
Rodriguez Endures Rough Angels Debut
The Angels hoped Grayson Rodriguez could stabilize the rotation after acquiring him from Baltimore during the offseason.
Instead, his long-awaited debut became another difficult moment in a frustrating season for Los Angeles.
Rodriguez allowed seven runs on seven hits and four walks while failing to complete four innings. He struggled with command throughout the outing, frequently working behind hitters.
The right-hander had not appeared in a major league game since July 2024 because of multiple injuries, including shoulder inflammation that delayed his 2026 debut.
The Dodgers quickly exposed the rust.
Rodriguez showed flashes of velocity, but inconsistent location and elevated pitch counts prevented him from finding rhythm. The Dodgers’ lineup remained patient and consistently punished mistakes over the plate.
The Angels still believe Rodriguez can eventually become a major contributor in the rotation, but Sunday demonstrated how much work remains ahead.
Angels Continue Difficult Stretch
The Angels entered the season hoping to compete for meaningful games deep into the summer. Instead, the club continues sliding further behind in the standings.
Sunday’s loss extended their losing streak to six games. The offense again struggled to create sustained pressure, managing only one run against Sasaki and the Dodgers’ bullpen.
Yoán Moncada accounted for the Angels’ lone run with an RBI single, but Los Angeles rarely threatened beyond isolated moments.
Pitching instability has become one of the team’s biggest problems during this stretch. Injuries, inconsistent starts, and bullpen breakdowns have repeatedly left the Angels chasing games early.
Defensively, the team also struggled to match the Dodgers’ sharp execution throughout the series.
The Angels failed to generate momentum offensively and suffered another lopsided defeat. The club has now dropped six straight games and continues struggling badly against stronger competition.
Dodgers Build Momentum Heading Into Division Clash
For the Dodgers, the sweep represented another strong step during the middle portion of the season.
The lineup remains one of baseball’s deepest groups, and several key players appear to be finding rhythm simultaneously. Tucker continues producing consistently, Ohtani looks rejuvenated at the plate and Pages has added important run production.
Most encouraging for Los Angeles may have been Sasaki’s continued growth.
The organization has remained patient with the young right-hander despite early setbacks. Sunday’s performance provided the clearest evidence yet that he may be developing into the frontline starter the Dodgers envisioned.
With five straight wins and momentum building, the Dodgers now turn their attention toward a critical division matchup.
