The Cleveland Guardians continued their long stretch of home success against the Los Angeles Angels with a 7-2 win on Monday night at Progressive Field. Joey Cantillo delivered six scoreless innings, while rookie Travis Bazzana highlighted a decisive third inning with a two-run double.

Cleveland controlled the game early and never allowed the Angels to recover. The Guardians used patient at-bats, aggressive baserunning and consistent pitching to open the three-game series with another comfortable home win over Los Angeles.

The result continued a dominant trend for Cleveland at Progressive Field. The Guardians have now won 28 of their last 32 home games against the Angels dating back to the start of the 2014 season.

Cantillo Provides Strong Start

Joey Cantillo set the tone on the mound with one of his strongest performances of the season. The left-hander allowed five hits across six scoreless innings while walking one batter and striking out four.

Cantillo worked efficiently and prevented the Angels from generating sustained pressure. He relied on command and pitch movement rather than overpowering velocity, forcing weak contact throughout the outing.

The Angels threatened occasionally but could not capitalize against Cleveland’s starter. Cantillo consistently escaped difficult counts and maintained control through the middle innings.

The victory improved his season record to 3-1 and gave Cleveland another reliable performance from its rotation.

Guardians Break Game Open Early

Cleveland established control during the second and third innings. Brayan Rocchio opened the scoring with an RBI single in the second after Angels opener Brent Suter exited the game.

The Guardians then erupted for five runs in the third inning. Cleveland took advantage of wildness from Angels pitching and combined disciplined at-bats with timely hits to extend the lead to 7-0.

David Fry drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run before Daniel Schneemann followed with a two-run single. Rookie Travis Bazzana capped the rally with a line-drive double to center field that drove in two more runs.

The inning reflected Cleveland’s patient approach at the plate. The Guardians forced the Angels into difficult situations by working counts and taking advantage of free passes.

Bazzana Continues Adjustment To Major Leagues

Travis Bazzana’s performance offered another encouraging sign for Cleveland’s future. The rookie infielder, selected first overall in the 2024 amateur draft, delivered one of the biggest hits of the game with his two-run double.

Bazzana has continued adjusting to major league pitching while showing flashes of the offensive ability that made him one of baseball’s top prospects.

His third-inning hit came during the biggest offensive stretch of the night and helped Cleveland create separation early. The rookie remained composed in a pressure situation and drove the ball cleanly into center field.

Cleveland continues to integrate younger players into the lineup successfully while remaining competitive atop the American League Central standings.

Angels Continue Difficult Stretch

The Angels entered the series hoping to reverse a difficult run but struggled again on both sides of the field. Los Angeles has now lost 16 of its last 21 games.

Pitching control became one of the biggest issues during Monday’s loss. Angels pitchers issued 10 walks, allowing Cleveland to build multiple scoring opportunities without needing extended rallies.

Brent Suter started the game as an opener and lasted fewer than two innings before Jose Fermin entered in relief. Suter allowed two runs before exiting, while the bullpen struggled to stop Cleveland’s offense during the third inning.

The Angels showed limited offensive production until late in the game. Nolan Schanuel and Jo Adell each recorded two hits, and Adell drove in a run during the eighth inning, but the lineup failed to create consistent pressure earlier against Cantillo.

Cleveland Offense Stays Balanced

The Guardians once again received contributions throughout the lineup. Kyle Manzardo and David Fry each collected two hits, while Rhys Hoskins reached base repeatedly and drew three walks.

Cleveland did not rely heavily on home runs to generate offense. Instead, the team built innings through patience, situational hitting and disciplined plate appearances.

The 10 walks matched a season high for the Guardians and reflected their ability to capitalize on pitching mistakes.

That balanced offensive approach has become one of Cleveland’s strengths during the opening months of the season.

Vogt Remains Away From Team

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt missed his second consecutive game because of a viral illness. Bench coach Tony Arnerich again handled managerial duties during the victory.

The team expects Vogt to return for Tuesday’s game. Cleveland has continued to perform steadily despite the temporary absence of its manager.

The Guardians remain one of the stronger teams in the American League Central and continue to build momentum during the homestand.

Angels Search For Stability

Los Angeles continues to search for consistency during one of the team’s roughest stretches this season. Pitching depth, defensive execution, and offensive production have all contributed to the recent struggles.

The Angels have especially struggled on the road, where they have repeatedly failed to limit scoring opportunities against stronger opponents.

Monday’s game followed a familiar pattern. Early pitching problems put the team behind quickly, and the offense could not recover against Cleveland’s pitching.

Up Next

The series continues Tuesday night at Progressive Field. The Angels are expected to start rookie right-hander Walbert Ureña against Cleveland right-hander Slade Cecconi.

Cleveland enters the second game of the series looking to continue its home dominance over Los Angeles and maintain momentum atop the division standings.
