The Winter Meetings are officially underway in Dallas, and they got kicked off to fireworks on Sunday night when superstar Juan Soto agreed to the largest deal in American sports history with the New York Mets. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Angels have been chipping away at free agency by making small, but meaningful additions as they look to compete for a playoff spot in 2025.
General manager Perry Minasian has added the likes of Yusei Kikuchi, Kyle Hendricks, Jorge Soler, Scott Kingery, Kevin Newman and more as they try to improve depth on a roster sorely lacking in it during a franchise-worst 99-loss season in 2024.
He did so with the green light from owner Arte Moreno to increase spending from their 2024 payroll. It was revealed that the Angels are going to spend more than they did in 2024, but less than they did in 2023 when their payroll totaled around $230 million.
So as Winter Meetings start and the Angels look at any more potential additions they can make to their lineup, bullpen and rotation, they first have to evaluate where their payroll sits right now.
If they still have significant spending room under $230 million, they could make some more splashy additions via the trade market or free agency. If not, they’ll have to continue chipping away with little moves that they hope pan out to a much-improved team.
Below, we take a look at the contracts already on the books, the estimated arbitration and pre-arbitration deals and where that leaves in Angels in total. All contract numbers and estimates are via Spotrac.
