The Los Angeles Angels were quiet on the situation that caused catcher Max Stassi to miss the entirety of the 2023 season, citing a family medical issue. They eventually placed the veteran catcher on the restricted list late in the season.
Recently, Stassi and his wife, Gabrielle, provided an update into the emotional challenges they’ve faced with their son, Jackson, who was born three months early on April 16. Enduring waves of obstacles, he’s continuing to grow stronger after nearly 200 days in the NICU.

Zach Neto, Logan O’Hoppe, Michael Lorenzen, Kiké Hernández, Zack Weiss, Tony Kemp, Davis Daniel, Hank Conger, and Dallas Braden, make up a growing list of current and former big leaguers who’ve extended their love to the Stassi family.
The Angels have shown an immense amount of support for the Stassi’s in both respecting their privacy, and providing them with the time necessary in tending to a matter as significant as their son’s health.
What’s next for Max Stassi
With no rush from anyone within the Angels organization rushing him back, when he’s prepared to make a return, he brings a well-rounded game to the table.
Now that second-year backstop Logan O’Hoppe seemingly has a leg-up on the starting gig, Stassi’s return would likely come in a reserve role. The combo of the two would be a superb scenario, having the ability to maintain a level of offensive output, with a seasoned game caller as your off-day guy.
If he intends to play in 2024, Stassi would log his 11th big league season, and his fifth with the Angels.
