The Los Angeles Angels season ended in unceremonious fashion with a fourth place finish in the American League West, which would unfortunately be the final run for manager Phil Nevin.
The Angels announced that Nevin wouldn’t be returning for the 2024 season, and would be declining his option for next year. Nevin took over for Joe Maddon early on in 2022, who was fired amidst a franchise-record losing streak.
Nevin continued a brutal franchise streak of his own, by guiding them to their eighth consecutive losing season. However, within the clubhouse, he was given the opportunity to manage the Angels because of his ability to develop relationships with players.
One play of note is Reid Detmers, who blossomed during his rookie season in last year, and has since enjoyed his time playing for Nevin, per Jeff Fletcher of the Southern California News Group:
“He was awesome,” Detmers said. “Very personable. You can talk to him about anything. He’s straight up with you, which I love. He’ll tell you how it is. And that’s what I think that’s what players need. He’ll tell you if you’re doing bad and he’ll tell you if you’re doing good. That’s more of a trust thing. Nev was awesome. Couldn’t ask for a better manager.”
As Nevin exits, the Angels will be on the hunt for yet another manager. They’ve been unable to replace the same level of skipper the franchise had in Mike Scioscia for 19 seasons.
The next manager is in line to inherent a solid crop of young starting pitchers who’ve been exposed to a lot of Major League time. Detmers, Chase Silseth, Sam Bachman, and Patrick Sandoval are a few of the controllable options that remain on the roster.
Former Angels player believes Mike Trout could influence front office
Failing to reach the postseason with the best duo in Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani is a disappointing instance. But with Ohtani entering free agency, the questions on if they’ll keep Trout in an Angels uniform are also on the table.
But with Trout under contract, he still figures to be with the team, however, his influence within the organization is also believed to be strong. That sentiment is shared by former Angels outfielder Torii Hunter, who believes the star center fielder has enough standing in the organization to persuade them.
