The first 2023 MLB All-Star Game voting update has the Los Angeles Angels represented by Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout at their respective positions among American League leaders.
Ohtani, who is on the ballot as a designated hitter, leads all AL players with 924,182 votes. He is topped by only the Atlanta Braves’ Ronald Acuña Jr., who received 1,086,537 votes.
Ohtani has been named an All-Star twice in his career, including each of the last two seasons. He started on the mound for the AL in 2021 and earned the win, but opted not to pitch last year.
Trout is the second-leading vote-getter among AL outfielders with 598,918. He trails only the New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge, who collected 844,965 votes.
Trout has made the All-Star Game in every season since becoming a full-time starter in 2012, excluding the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign that didn’t have a Midsummer Classic.
As for the other Angels players on the ballot, Brandon Drury and Anthony Rendon rank fifth in voting among NL second basemen and third basemen with 146,476 and 147,258 votes, respectively.
Zach Neto ranks sixth in voting among AL shortstops, Jared Walsh is seventh among first basemen, Matt Thaiss ranks eighth among catchers and Hunter Renfroe is 17th among outfielders.
Phase 1 for 2023 MLB All-Star Game voting is open until 9 a.m. PT on Thursday, June 22. During Phase 1 of voting, fans may select one player for each infield position in both leagues, three outfielders and one designated hitter. A write-in space is also provided for players who are not listed on the All-Star Game ballot.
