One thing that the Los Angeles Angels have taken a recent push towards is their minor league system and the depth and talent among their prospect pool. In their lower ranks, Edgar Quero is making a name for himself with some eye-popping numbers in his first full season with the Inland Empire 66ers.
A native of Cienfuegos, Cuba, Quero was signed in 2021 and as recent as this February, was ranked in the Angels’ top-10 prospects by Keith Law. A $200,000 signing bonus brought him into the Angels organization and he quickly made his way through the ACL up to Low-A with the 66ers.
Quero is a switch-hitting catcher that has a knack for finding a lot of barrels when he does make contact, and according to Jim Callis, Sam Dykstra and Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com, his talent will soon put his name in the top-100 hat:
We received a lot of questions about how close Quero, a 19-year-old backstop who has a season line of .313/.426/.531 in his first full year in Single-A, was to making the Top 100. And he’s not far off. If he keeps doing what he’s done, and his .315/.423/.620 performance over the last month is right in line with what he’s done all season, then he’ll work his way onto the list soon enough.
His ascension to the top of the Angels’ prospect list makes two of their top-five guys, catchers. Recently acquired Logan O’Hoppe and Quero are both on different timelines, but it does provide Perry Minasian with some flexibility and some pieces to move around if they decide to package one of them in a trade.
Quero is still just 19 years old, but he’s already launched 15 home runs and notched 66 RBI in 99 games with the 66ers.
