Major League Baseball announced the All-Star Game voting update on Tuesday, and Los Angeles Angels nine-time All-Star Mike Trout ranks second in the American League and third in the Majors with 1,295,854 votes.
With a ninth starting assignment, Trout would become the eighth player in AL history to earn nine fan elections with one club, joining Cal Ripken Jr. (Baltimore Orioles, 17); George Brett (Kansas City Royals, 11); Ken Griffey Jr. (Seattle Mariners, 10); Rod Carew (Minnesota Twins, 9); Derek Jeter (New York Yankees, 9); Ichiro Suzuki (Mariners, 9) and Iván Rodríguez (Texas Rangers, 9).
Trout trails only Yankees star Aaron Judge, who leads all players in MLB with 1,512,368 votes, and the Angels’ center fielder is followed by Giancarlo Stanton of the Yankees (504,537), his teammate Taylor Ward (497,361) and Byron Buxton of the Minnesota Twins (403,050), while Toronto Blue Jays teammates Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (381,591) and Teoscar Hernández (374,226) are challenging for the right to advance to the Finalists Phase.
Shohei Ohtani is currently trailing at the designated hitter position with 555,056 votes to Yordan Alvarez of the Houston Astros, who has 835,669 votes so far.
Among other Angels players, Max Stassi ranks eighth among catchers with 131,518 votes, Jared Walsh is the No. 6 first baseman with 140,975 votes and Andrew Valazquez checks in as the ninth shortstop with 111,869 votes.
David Fletcher, despite only appearing in 14 games this season, is the seventh second baseman with 103,524 votes, and although his season is done, Anthony Rendon checked in at No. 6 among third baseman with 152,141 votes.

MLB All-Star voting process
The 2022 MLB All-Star Ballot, which is available exclusively online and via mobile devices at MLB.com, all 30 club web sites and the MLB App, will be accessible until the voting period for Phase 1 concludes at 11:00 a.m. PT on Thursday, June 30th.
During the initial voting period, fans can submit up to five ballots per 24-hour period on MLB platforms. On Thursday, June 30th, the top two vote-getters at each position (and the top six outfielders) in each League will be revealed on MLB Network at 2:00 p.m. (PT), and they will advance to the second phase of voting to determine who makes the All-Star teams and starts for each League.
In addition, for the first time since two-phase balloting began in 2019, the leading vote-getter in each league during the first phase of voting will receive an automatic starting assignment at the All-Star Game and bypass the second phase of voting. (Note: if an outfielder is a league’s leading vote-getter, Phase 2 voting at the position will still take place to determine the remaining two starters among the next four outfield finalists).
Phase 2 will begin at 9:00 a.m. (PT) on Tuesday, July 5th, with fans voting among the finalists at each position during a four-day window that concludes at 11:00 a.m. (PT) on Friday, July 8th. Later that night, the winners will be announced at 4:00 p.m. (PT) on ESPN during the 2022 Chevrolet MLB All-Star Starters Reveal.
During this second phase of voting, in which fans can vote once on MLB platforms, vote totals will reset (i.e., vote totals from Phase 1 do not carry over) and the winner at each position (including three outfielders per League) will be named a starting position player for the 2022 Midsummer Classic.
With the National League’s adaptation of the designated hitter, both the NL All-Star Team, which will be managed by Brian Snitker of the defending World Series Champion Atlanta Braves, and the AL All-Star Team, led by former Dodger All-Star Dusty Baker of the defending AL Champion Astros, will have nine elected starters via the fan balloting program.
The pitchers and reserves for both squads – totaling 23 for each side – will be determined through a combination of “Player Ballot” choices and selections made by the Commissioner’s Office. The balance of the All-Star rosters will be announced on Sunday, July 10th at 2:30 p.m. (PT) on ESPN during the 2022 Chevrolet MLB All-Star Selection Show.
