The Los Angeles Angels took 4-of-5 from the Seattle Mariners in their most recent series that included a doubleheader on Saturday, and Mike Trout led the way at the plate.
After their freefall from atop the American League West, the Angels have needed to play inspired baseball to regain their footing as a team. Unfortunately, that losing streak was also met with a difficult stretch for Trout.
In his last seven games, Trout has turned it on and slugged five home runs that ties an Angels record for a single series, he was also the last to achieve that feat in 2019 against the Texas Rangers.
According to Elias Sports, his five homers in the series at Seattle tied an Angels record for most in a single series. He joined Doug DeCinces (Aug. 2-5, 1982 vs. Minnesota), Garret Anderson (June 3-5, 2003 at Montreal), Vladimir Guerrero (Sept. 27-30, 2004 at Texas), and Trout also accomplished the feat previously (Apr. 4-7, 2019 vs. Texas).
Trout also hit his 52nd career home run against the Mariners, which ties Rafael Palmeiro for the most all-time against Seattle. He has 33 career home runs at T-Mobile Park, and in this series, he passed Ken Griffey Jr., Mike Cameron, and Justin Smoak on the ballpark’s all-time list.
His 21 home runs on the season are second to Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees and he currently leads all of Major League Baseball in on-base plus slugging. His 3.8 WAR is tied for first in MLB with St. Louis Cardinals’ first baseman, Paul Goldschmidt.
Trout first since Albert Pujols to achieve feat
When Trout homered in the second game of the doubleheader on June 18 against the Mariners, he became the first Angels player since Albert Pujols on July 20, 2015, against the Boston Red Sox.
There have been only four players in the franchise’s history with home runs in both games of a doubleheader in the last 45 years, and Trout put his name next to Pujols, Garret Anderson, and Fred Lynn.
