The Los Angeles Angels ended their nine-game home stand with five straight losses and they now face their biggest test yet as they face the New York Yankees to begin their six-game road trip.
After being swept by the Toronto Blue Jays, the Angels now sit four games behind the Houston Astros in the American League West with a record of 27-22, but they still have the third best run differential in the AL at +42, which is a positive sign for the club moving forward.
The Yankees have been among baseball’s top teams all season, sitting first in the American League East and tied for the best record in baseball with the L.A. Dodgers at 33-15. However, over their last 10 games they have played .500 baseball but still hold the top run differential in the AL at +71.
Game 1: 4:05 p.m.
The Angels send Noah Syndergaard to the mound in game one coming off one of his best starts of the season where he pitched eight innings and allowed just one earned run against the Texas Rangers.
In 38 innings, he owns a 3.08 ERA with 27 strikeouts across seven starts.
The Yankees counter with Jordan Montgomery, who has posted a 3.30 ERA with 37 strikeouts across 46.1 innings in nine starts.
In his last outing, the southpaw pitched six innings and allowed two earned runs against the Baltimore Orioles.
Game 2: 4:05 p.m.
Reid Detmers will take the ball in game two looking to improve upon his last outing when he gave up five earned runs in six innings against the Rangers.
The rookie has struggled with inconsistency this season, so despite throwing a no-hitter, he’s still posted an ERA of 4.65 in his eight starts with 40.2 innings pitched.
In the midst of a breakout season, Nestor Cortes starts for the Yankees. The southpaw owns a 1.70 ERA through 53 innings and nine starts.
He also dominated against the Tampa Bay Rays his last time out, throwing eight innings and allowing just one earned run. The Angels will have their work cut out for them this game.
Game 3: 4:05 p.m.
In the final game, Shohei Ohtani makes his ninth start of the season. He has previously posted a 3.45 ERA in 44.1 innings while striking out 63 batters.
He was roughed up a bit in his last outing, giving up five earned runs in six innings against the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Yankees turn to Jameson Taillon, who is having a resurgent season after struggling last year. In 50.2 innings, the right-hander owns a 2.49 ERA with 39 strikeouts in nine starts.
Taillon pitched eight shutout innings in his last outing against the Rays.
