Minor League Baseball (MiLB) today announced the Player and Pitcher of the Month Award winners for April in each of the 11 leagues in Major League Baseball’s player development system.
The Los Angeles Angels had three of their prospects named, which was tied with the St. Louis Cardinals for the most by any MLB organization.
In the Southern League, the Double-A Rocket City Trash Pandas had two of their players named with outfielder Trey Cabbage and pitcher Chase Silseth winning the Player and Pitcher of the Month awards, respectively.
Cabbage led the league in average (.356), home runs (eight), RBI (21), total bases (57), slugging percentage (.781) and OPS (1.265). He was second in on-base percentage (.484), third in hits (26) and walks (6) and fifth in runs (15).
The 25-year-old was originally selected by Minnesota in the fourth round of the 2015 MLB Draft out of Grainger High School in Rutledge, Tennessee. He signed with the Angels as a Minor League free agent after the 2021 season.
Silseth went 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA in his four starts. The right-hander struck out 27 batters in 20 innings and held opponents to a .188 average. The 21-year-old was selected by Los Angeles in the 11th round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of the University of Arizona.
In the Northwest League, the High-A Tri-City Dust Devils had Braden Olthoff named as the Pitcher of the Month. The right-hander went 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA in four starts. He scattered 12 hits over 20 innings while striking out 26 and holding opponents to a .171 average.
The 23-year-old was selected by Los Angeles in the ninth round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of Tulane University.
Taylor Ward won American League player of the week
Taylor Ward is in the midst of a breakout season, and his early contributions made him the American League Player of the Week. This is his first career A.L. player of the week award and the Angels’ first recipient since fellow teammate David Fletcher did in July 2021.
Ward batted .448 (13-for-29) with 10 runs scored, two doubles, a triple, four home runs, 11 RBI, two walks, and a 1.000 slugging percentage over seven games played this past week.
He logged at least one hit in every game during his award-winning week, including four multi-hit games, and registered his first career multi-home run game.
