Lane Thomas hit a dramatic three-run homer in the 10th inning as the Kansas City Royals completed a comeback and defeated the Los Angeles Angels 11-9 on Sunday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium.

The Royals erased a late three-run deficit, survived a lengthy weather delay, and finished a three-game sweep with one of their most dramatic wins of the season. Thomas ended the game with his first home run of the year, sending a drive into the seats with runners on second and third.

Kansas City continued to show resilience throughout the afternoon. The Royals fought back repeatedly after trailing early and eventually overwhelmed an Angels bullpen that struggled to close out the game.

Angels Start Fast Behind Trout

Los Angeles built an early lead with an aggressive offense against Royals starter Seth Lugo.

Zach Neto opened the game with a single before Mike Trout followed with a two-run homer. The blast carried added significance for Trout, who moved into first place in Angels franchise history for career extra-base hits.

The Angels continued adding pressure during the second inning. Neto delivered an RBI double, and Adam Frazier added another run-scoring hit during a four-run frame that extended the lead to 6-0.

Los Angeles appeared to be in full control through the middle innings. The lineup consistently generated hard contact and forced Lugo into difficult situations almost every inning.

The Angels later pushed the advantage to 7-4 before the weather interrupted the game in the seventh inning.

Weather Delay Changes Momentum

The game took a major turn after severe weather forced a delay in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Kansas City had runners on base and no outs when play stopped for nearly 90 minutes. Before the delay, the Angels still maintained a comfortable lead and appeared positioned to avoid a sweep.

Once play resumed, the Royals immediately resumed pressure. Vinnie Pasquantino lifted a sacrifice fly that cut the deficit to 7-5 and kept momentum moving toward Kansas City.

The extended break disrupted the rhythm of both teams, but the Royals adjusted faster after returning to the field.

Royals Continue Climb Back

Kansas City continued chipping away during the late innings.

Salvador Perez added another run in the eighth inning, narrowing the gap further and keeping pressure on the Angels’ bullpen.

Then came the biggest moment before extra innings. Jac Caglianone, who entered the game as a reserve earlier in the contest, stepped to the plate with two outs in the ninth inning.

Caglianone drove a two-run homer just inside the right-field foul pole to tie the game at 8-8 and energize the home crowd.

The dramatic home run erased another Angels lead and completed the Royals’ comeback from three runs down late in the game.

Thomas Finishes Comeback In 10th

The Angels briefly regained the lead in the top of the 10th inning, but Kansas City responded again in the bottom half.

With runners on second and third, Lane Thomas stepped in against reliever Joey Lucchesi. Thomas connected for a three-run walk-off homer that completed the comeback and gave Kansas City an 11-9 victory.

The homer marked Thomas’ first of the season and the first walk-off RBI of his major league career.

Kansas City players flooded the field immediately after the ball cleared the wall, ending a game filled with momentum swings and late drama.

The Royals continued to show offensive depth throughout the afternoon. Multiple players contributed key hits, and the lineup consistently responded after falling behind.

Angels Bullpen Struggles Again

The loss exposed more late-game problems for the Angels.

Starter Reid Detmers performed well early and allowed only three runs over five-plus innings. He limited Kansas City’s offense through most of his outing before exiting after a walk in the sixth inning.

The bullpen, however, failed to protect multiple late leads. Los Angeles struggled to stop Kansas City’s momentum after the weather delay and could not recover after Caglianone’s tying homer.

Joey Lucchesi took the loss after allowing the decisive home run in the 10th inning.

The Angels have repeatedly struggled in close games during recent weeks. Inconsistent relief pitching and missed opportunities late in games continue to hurt the club.

Royals Show Offensive Depth

Kansas City’s lineup remained productive throughout the game even after the early deficit.

Bobby Witt Jr. hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning and continued to provide offensive energy near the top of the order. Isaac Collins added an RBI single earlier in the game, while Perez and Pasquantino each produced key runs during the comeback.

The Royals also benefited from patience at the plate and aggressive situational hitting after the weather delay.

Even though Lugo allowed seven runs over 6 1/3 innings, Kansas City’s offense consistently gave the team opportunities to recover.
