MLB All-Star Game: Mike Trout & Shohei Ohtani Selected As Starters

The MLB All-Star Game is fast approaching, and with that comes the announcement of the starting lineups for the American and National League. Los Angeles Angels stars Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani each led the initial round of voting at their respective positions, but that wasn’t enough to guarantee a starting spot.

This year’s vote was different than in any year prior. There was a first round of voting, where fans could submit a ballot featuring whichever players they wanted at each position. From there, the top three vote-getters — and top nine for the outfield — moved on to a second round, where fans could only vote between the finalists.

Now that the second round has come and gone, it has been announced that Trout and Ohtani were selected to start at the All-Star Game, with each winning their position group by a considerable margin.

This result is unsurprising given the star power between the two. Trout received 19% of the AL outfield vote, six points higher than second place. Meanwhile, Ohtani won 63% of the designated hitter voter, beating out Boston Red Sox slugger J.D. Martinez by 43 points.

Trout will not be eligible to play in the Midsummer Classic, sadly. There was hope that he would be ready to go by then, however the Angels recently placed him on the 60-day IL, meaning he cannot return to play until July 17 at the earliest.

It is also unclear whether or not Ohtani will be allowed to pitch, given that he was selected as a designated hitter. Some other interesting voting results include the Houston Astros and L.A. Dodgers, who both have zero starters despite having seven and five finalists, respectively.

The full results of the vote and the official starting lineups can be seen below. The 2021 MLB All-Star Game will take place on July 13 at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado.
