Mike Trout continued his strong season with a two-run home run and an RBI double, while Reid Detmers delivered seven scoreless innings as the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-0 on Tuesday night.
The Angels combined timely hitting with another effective outing from their pitching staff to even the three-game series. Los Angeles collected 14 hits, received a three-hit performance from Logan O’Hoppe, and never allowed Arizona’s offense to gain momentum.
Trout supplied the biggest swings of the night, but the Angels received contributions throughout the lineup as they backed one of Detmers’ best starts of the season.
Angels Build Early Lead
Los Angeles opened the scoring in the second inning when Wade Meckler lined an RBI single to bring home the game’s first run.
The Angels added another in the third after Zach Neto launched a solo home run. The blast was his 14th of the season and continued his productive stretch at the plate.
Los Angeles extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth when Donovan Walton delivered an RBI single.
The offense broke the game open an inning later. Trout crushed a 436-foot two-run homer to straightaway center field, pushing the Angels’ advantage to 5-0 and giving the veteran outfielder another signature moment during an impressive offensive season.
Trout added another run in the sixth with an RBI double that scored Denzer Guzman, increasing the lead to 6-0.
Walton capped the scoring in the eighth with a ground-rule double that drove in Logan O’Hoppe.
Detmers Continues Strong Stretch
Detmers turned in another steady performance on the mound.
The left-hander worked seven shutout innings, allowing only three hits while striking out three. He kept Arizona’s hitters off balance throughout the game and consistently escaped the few scoring opportunities the Diamondbacks created.
The outing continued an encouraging run for Detmers, who has now allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his last five starts and in nine of his past 10 appearances.
Arizona managed only three hits against him. Adrian Del Castillo recorded the Diamondbacks’ first hit with a single in the third inning, while Ketel Marte and Geraldo Perdomo added singles in the sixth.
The Diamondbacks finished 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position and stranded five baserunners.
Kirby Yates and Chase Silseth completed the shutout with two scoreless innings of relief, preserving the Angels’ dominant pitching performance.
Balanced Offense Leads The Way
Although Trout delivered the biggest offensive highlight, Los Angeles received production throughout the lineup.
The Angels finished with 14 hits, keeping constant pressure on Arizona starter Merrill Kelly.
O’Hoppe led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance, while Walton collected two RBI on a single and a double. Meckler and Neto each drove in a run before Trout’s home run effectively put the game out of reach.
The balanced attack prevented Arizona from settling into any rhythm on the mound and allowed the Angels to steadily build their lead throughout the evening.
Kelly Struggles Against Angels Lineup
Merrill Kelly endured a difficult outing for the Diamondbacks.
The veteran right-hander surrendered 11 hits and six earned runs over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked one but was unable to slow an Angels lineup that consistently found quality contact.
Arizona’s bullpen limited further damage after Kelly exited, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
Up Next
The series concludes Wednesday in Phoenix.
Arizona will send left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez to the mound. Rodriguez enters with a 5-2 record and a 2.55 ERA.
The Angels are scheduled to counter with left-hander Sam Aldegheri, who takes the ball with a 2-1 record and a 2.12 ERA.
