The Los Angeles Angels have been on the side of good fortune with numerous returns from injury this season. And with the most recent news on third baseman, Anthony Rendon, that fortune could continue, as he could see the field much sooner than expected.
Rendon underwent wrist surgery in June to address some issues that had plagued him for a good part of the season, and it marked the second year in a row he dealt with a potentially season-ending procedure.
According to members of the Angels and their staff, Rendon’s availability hinges on how the next week plays out, via Jeff Fletcher of the O.C. Register:
Mike Frostad, the Angels’ head athletic trainer, said Rendon is passing all the tests so far. He also said Rendon will go on the Angels’ upcoming trip. The trip starts in Houston, which is where Rendon lives, so the true indication of Rendon’s progress will probably be better assessed by whether he’s in Cleveland next week.
Rendon was scuffling for a decent portion of the few months he was on the field this year, but his lack of production in the power category raised eyebrows in his overall health.
If he is healthy and won’t risk further injury by being out there, then a few weeks to get the feel back headed into the offseason could be a positive heading into the fall.
When Rendon was asked on Tuesday afternoon if it would be possible for him to come back this season, he said: “I don’t know. We’ll see.”
On the season, Rendon posted a .228/.324/.383 slash and a 103 wRC+, which is certainly underwhelming for the high-priced player he is.
Anthony Rendon wants to be a role model for young players
Rendon has been trying to be a leader for the Angels, who have many young players, and wanted to install a winning mentality into all the players.
His veteran presence was also noted by former Angels manager Joe Maddon, who was thankful to have the third baseman mentoring the younger players.
