The Los Angeles Angels announced a series of Minor League deals with José Godoy, Gerardo Reyes and Cam Vieaux, all of who have prior experience in Major League Baseball. The trio was assigned to the Triple-A Salt Lake Bees.
Godoy, 26, is the youngest of the group and has just 26 games at the Major League level. In 57 at-bats, the backstop logged a .123 batting average, striking out 23 times. He’s spent time with the Minnesota Twins and Pittsburgh Pirates.
His numbers in Triple-A with the Twins and Pirates were a bit better, as he held a .654 OPS in 53 games between both clubs. The Angels aren’t banking on anything but depth at the top end of their Minor League system with Godoy, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he’s just a filler.
Reyes, 29, wrapped up the 2022 season with the Angels, his second stint in MLB. In two innings with the team last year, he allowed one earned run, walked three, giving up four hits.
He was in the San Diego Padres organization for the better part of three years from 2016-to-2019, cracking their Major League roster in his final season with the team. In 28 career MLB innings, Reyes has a 7.39 ERA, 4.17 FIP, and a 1.46 WHIP.
Vieaux, 29, is a southpaw drafted in the 6th round by the Pirates in the 2016 Draft. He progressed through their Minor League system from Low-A to MLB. However, in 8.2 innings with the club this past season, he allowed 10 earned runs on 15 hits, including two home runs.
He is the most intriguing of these signings, mainly because of his rise through the Pirates system, and with such a small sample size at the big league level. In 50 innings at Triple-A Indianapolis, Vieaux posted a 3.06 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP.
Angels sign pair of position players to Minor League deals
Outfielder Luis Barrera and infielder José Gomez were signed to Minor League contracts in late December. The deals include an invite to Spring Training, giving both the opportunity to compete for depth roles.
Barrera, 27, was brought in after spending the 2021 season with the Oakland Athletics the prior two years. In 38 games, he posted a .235/.290/.329 slash in 93 plate appearances. He spent the majority of the season with the Triple-A Las Vegas Aviators, batting .263/.329/.436, including eight home runs and 45 runs batted in.
Gomez, 26, split time this past season between Triple-A Salt Lake and Double-A with the Rocket City Trash Pandas. His production took a step forward with the Trash Pandas, batting .260 across 312 plate appearances.
