With reliever Austin Warren nursing an injury, the Los Angeles Angels decided to place him on the injured list and recall right-hander Chase Silseth to take his spot on the roster.

Warren alerted the Angels staff that his elbow didn’t feel right during warm up’s prior to Tuesday’s game, and the team opted to get ahead of the issue and shut him down until they can further evaluate. The 27-year-old spent the early part of the season with the Salt Lake Bees at Triple-A, but upon his initial call-up on April 21, manager Phil Nevin used him on back-to-back days against the Kansas City Royals.

After throwing just two pitches on Saturday, Nevin brought Warren back out on Sunday for 1.1 innings of work when he allowed one run on a solo shot. He would go on to earn the win following his appearance, but for now, the focus is on the status of his elbow.

Warren discussed his injury and agreed that the best course is to slow it down, via Jeff Fletcher of the O.C. Register:

“I just had some elbow discomfort so I just shut it down,” Warren said after Tuesday’s game. “Never had any issues with my elbow so it kind of scared me. Shut it down, and came and got treatment and they thought the best thing to do is throw me on the IL.”

With Warren out, the Angels plan to keep Silseth in the bullpen. He could not only provide length, but he brings an elite arsenal with his mid-to-upper 90s four-seam fastball that has helped him post a 0.90 ERA with 20 punchouts in 20 innings.

Silseth is the most MLB-ready arm the Angels have that they’ve yet to debut this season and should give manager Phil Nevin a solid option he can deploy with a fair amount of confidence.

Jared Walsh making strides in return to Los Angeles Angels

Prior to Opening Day, it was revealed that Walsh had been dealing with bouts of insomnia and headaches and would be away from the club to find a treatment plan to get him on the mend. The Angels have been using Gio Urshela and journeyman Jake Lamb at first base in the interim, a platoon that has been less than stellar.

After missing the first month of the season, the Angels and general manager Perry Minasian believe he’s close to a return.
