The Los Angeles Angels entered 2022 with a clear front-end of the rotation behind Shohei Ohtani with the signings of Michael Lorenzen and Noah Syndergaard, but they found exceptional contributions from Reid Detmers, who tossed his first career no-hitter and has been since recognized by MLB for that feat.
Detmers was awarded the American League Player of the Week after his performance against an extremely competitive lineup in the Tampa Bay Rays. This is the first, non-two-way player to win the award for the Angels since Matt Shoemaker won it in July 2016 and is the first left-handed pitcher to do so since Chuck Finley in July 1997.
He is the first Angels rookie to win the award since Ohtani won it twice in 2018.

Detmers is not known for his strikeout stuff, but when he is dialed in, his command and control can be enough to hold even the stingiest offense to nothing doing.
At just 22 years and 306 days old, he became the youngest pitching in club history to throw a no-hitter and the Angels’ first individual no-hitter since Jered Weaver powered his way to his own in May 2012.
Angels prospect honored by Northwest League
Angels High-A prospect Edwin Yon was named the Northwest League Player of the Week after batting a remarkable .545 to go with six hits and six RBI during a series with the Evertt AquaSox.
Congratulations to Outfielder Edwin Yon for being named the Northwest League Player of the Week! Yon had an astounding .545 batting average to go along with six hits and six RBI against the Everett AquaSox! #tcdustdevils pic.twitter.com/ASKZiHhnhZ

At 23-years-old, Yon’s development has been hindered by extra time in rookie ball, but given his struggles over the years, seeing his improvement as a more well-rounded hitter is a plus on what could become a situation where he is beginning to age out of his competition in his current league.
After posting a .847 OPS in 2021, Yon and his 6′ 8″, 237-pound body will need to ride this week of incredible play and watch it vault him higher up the minor league chain.
