The Los Angeles Angels placed Hunter Renfroe on the paternity list and recalled Jo Adell from Triple-A Salt Lake as the corresponding move prior to their matchup against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday.

MLB roster rules require Renfroe to remain on paternity leave for at least one day but no more than three. In the meantime, Adell will try to make the most of what could be a brief stint in the Majors.

Angels manager Phil Nevin admitted he isn’t sure if Adell will remain with the team when Renfroe returns, per Doug Padilla of the Southern California News Group:

“You know, a lot of things could happen in the next couple of days,” Manager Phil Nevin said when asked if Adell will head back to Triple-A as soon as Renfroe returns. “… I’m not sure if (Renfroe) will take the whole time or not. They are here in town so we’ll just see how the next couple of days go.”

Adell is a former top prospect who hasn’t been able to produce consistently at the Major League level. He impressed in Spring Training this year but didn’t make the Angels’ Opening Day roster.

Nevin took the demotion in stride and has enjoyed plenty of success with Salt Lake, which Nevin pointed out:

“Obviously everybody knows the start he got off to,” Nevin said. “Nobody is going to stay that hot for an entire year, but he’s still swinging the bat good, playing great defense and really working (hard) still. Everything we’ve heard back: Great attitude, great teammate. We look forward to seeing him.”

Adell is batting a solid .278/.365/.593 with 12 doubles, 18 home runs and 43 RBI in 242 plate appearances across 55 games with the Bees this season.

The 24-year-old has appeared in parts of three seasons with the Angels, including 2022, when he played in a career-high 88 games. He batted .224/.264/.373 with 22 extra-base hits and 27 RBI in 285 plate appearances.

Jo Adell expected to be in Angels lineup on Thursday

Adell, who was en route to Anaheim on Wednesday, is expected to be in the Angels lineup for their series finale against the Cubs.
