The Los Angeles Angels have breathed a collective sigh of relief since Mike Trout was diagnosed with a rare back condition, but all signs have been positive for the generational outfielder on his road back to the field.

The 30-year-old hasn’t appeared since July 12 but has been making good progress since meeting with spine specialist Dr. Robert Watkins in late July. Trout’s latest step was taking on-field batting practice with the club prior to their Aug. 13 game with the Minnesota Twins.

Angels interim manager Phil Nevin has maintained his honesty about the fragility of Trout’s progress, and fortunately, he should soon be penciling Trout onto the lineup card as soon as Wednesday, via MLB.com:

Trout had a scheduled day off on Aug. 16, but Nevin said Trout felt great after facing live pitching. Trout’s return appears imminent, and Nevin was asked if he could return as soon as Aug. 17. Nevin wouldn’t fully rule it out, but Trout seems more likely to return on Aug. 19 against the Tigers in Detroit.

Trout’s absence has left a void in the heart of the Angels lineup, and the team has posted a 13-16 record since he’s been out. The silver lining for Trout and the team is there will be no pressure to go above his ability given the state of his body because of where they are in the standings.

Jo Adell hopeful to return soon

On Monday night, both David Fletcher and Jo Adell took errant foul balls. Fletcher hit his foot and was removed from the game, but was able to play on Tuesday night. However, Adell (thumb) missed the 8-2 loss. There is no indication he’ll need an IL stint, and could return within the next couple games.
