The Los Angeles Angels have announced they are bringing on Matt Vasgersian as the play-by-play announcer alongside Mark Gubicza and Jose Mota for the 2021 season.

Vasgersian replaces Victor Rojas, who served in this position on Fox Sports West from 2010-20 before leaving in the offseason to become the President and GM of the Frisco RoughRiders.

This is a massive hire for the Angels, as Vasgersian is one of the most recognizable and talented voices in the industry. Vasgersian was previously the play-by-play voice for the Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres before joining Fox Sports in 2006.

Since then, he has served in major roles with Fox, MLB Network, and most recently ESPN as the Sunday Night Baseball play-by-play announcer. He is also known for his work as the voice of the “MLB: The Show” video game franchise.

The Angels announced the hire on Thursday afternoon following a Spring Training win vs. the San Francisco Giants:

The Angels are now home to one of the best commentary duos in the game with Gubicza and Vasgersian. Gubicza could not contain his excitement, sending out two tweets about the hire:

The Angels will likely debut this new broadcast team on April 1 on Fox Sports West, when Mike Trout and the Halos take on the Chicago White Sox in their home opener. Vasgersian, Gubicza, and Mota will make up a three-man booth, similar to ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball.

The details of Vasgersian’s deal were not announced to the public.

Angels defeat Giants in seven innings while at full strength

While they played just seven innings, nearly the entire Angels roster played in their 5-4 win over the Giants. Mike Trout and Dexter Fowler homered while Albert Pujols drove in a run. The win moved the Angels to 6-4 in Spring Training.
