The Los Angeles Angels broke camp with Jo Adell on their active roster to start the 2022 regular season, but glaring issues with his play forced the club to option him to Triple-A Salt Lake in early May. However, it has been his handling of the back and forth that has earned him praise from those in the organization.
Adell struggled in April in different areas, from defensively to at the plate and with mental lapses. His on-base percentage was nearly identical to this batting average, and he struck out 21 times while walking only once.
Optioning Adell was necessary with that type of play as it’s unsustainable for anyone, especially for a 23-year-old former top prospect. However, he turned it around in May with a .367 on-base percentage and six home runs while tallying 13 walks in 64 at-bats with the Bees.
Adell was recalled for a stretch from June 5 through June 10 and hit .368 AVG and a .429 OBP, which is a credit to himself, via Jeff Fletcher of the O.C. Register:
“I think (he’s improved at) base running, defense, offense,” said Angels General manager Perry Minasian. “He’s a really young player. I think for him just to continue to get everyday at-bats was really important. He’s going down there and he’s had the right attitude. That’s what really impressive. We’ve all seen certain players in the past who go up and go down and can take a certain type of attitude to Triple-A. They might not necessarily perform or work the way they should and he’s been the exact opposite. He’s been awesome. It’s a testament to him and his makeup”
With a void left at third base after losing Anthony Rendon for the season and the need for another right-handed bat in the lineup, Adell may get the call to MLB in the near future if he shows the ability to repeat his mechanics and play mistake-free baseball.
Details on Rendon’s surgery
The Angels announced Anthony Rendon will miss the remainder of the season to undergo surgery on his right wrist and fix the issues that have plagued him throughout the season.
The surgery will repair a subluxation of a tendon in his right wrist, which will require a four to six-month rehab period. The injury is essentially a dislocation of the tendon in his wrist, which is causing discomfort and inflammation.
This is the second straight season Rendon has been shut down due to injury after undergoing hip surgery last season. The veteran third baseman shared his disappointment to see another season wasted.
