Los Angeles Angels pitching prospect Chase Silseth has factored into the club’s plans by providing innings out of the bullpen. With his high-velocity arsenal, he remained a candidate to find time as the sixth-man when needed in the starting rotation.
The Angels have rotated a few arms on the extra day, including Tucker Davidson and Griffin Canning, but Silseth is set to be the latest to get the call.
Manager Phil Nevin alluded to Silseth being in conversations to make this start last week when discussing who is best equipped for today, via Sarah Valenzuela of the L.A. Times:
Phil Nevin said Chase Silseth makes the most sense to get a start the next time the Angels need six starters because he’s the most stretched out and was starting games in triple-A a few weeks ago. It’s been over a month since Tucker Davidson last made a start.

Through four games, he’s posted a 3.24 ERA in 8.1 innings pitched, with a .167 batting average allowed. He’s surrendered just two extra-base hits on the year, and he’s allowed a .100 batting average on his fastball.
Silseth has five pitches to choose from but mainly relies on his four-seam fastball, cutter, and slider to navigate his way through hitters. But with his usage mainly coming as a reliever, the right-hander should be expected to use his splitter and sinker to give hitters a full look.
He matches up with a Baltimore Orioles lineup that hasn’t had much of a look at him, but their opportunistic offense and bevy of hot-hitting options should make for a tough challenge for Silseth. The Angels won’t need more than five innings from him after the club only used Chris Devenski and Matt Moore to put up two scoreless innings in the 9-5 win on Monday.
Angels outfielder Mickey Moniak makes MLB history in season debut
Prior to their matchup against the Cleveland Guardians on Friday, the Angels recalled Mickey Moniak from Triple-A Salt Lake and optioned Jake Lamb as the corresponding move.
The Angels acquired Moniak from the Philadelphia Phillies at the trade deadline last year, and the former No. 1 overall draft pick showed glimpses of his potential before a finger injury derailed his season.
Moniak made his season debut on Saturday, which also happened to be his 25th birthday, and the outfielder made an immediate impact with a leadoff homer, which also made some MLB and Angels history.
