The Los Angeles Angels will be without Austin Warren for an undetermined amount of time after a pregame accident in Boston last week.

Although the Angels’ bullpen has performed well in 2022, Warren was a key piece in the bullpen last season. He provided manager Joe Maddon with a reliable option after posting a 1.77 ERA, a 1.033 WHIP, and a 4.00 K-to-BB ratio in 20.1 innings.

But this season has been a bit of a grind for the 26-year-old and will be put on hold for a procedure to repair a fracture from an errant baseball during batting practice before a game against the Boston Red Sox, according to Sam Blum of The Athletic:

Austin Warren will undergo surgery Tuesday for a nasal fracture. Warren was placed on the IL while the team was in Boston last week after he was hit on the right side of his face by a batted ball during batting practice. He said he didn’t see the ball coming. The injury sent him to the hospital.

Warren underwent the surgery on Tuesday and is now on the road to recovery. The recovery time for a fractured nose is roughly 4-8 weeks depending on the severity of the injury due to the sensitive nature of the area.

Warren hasn’t appeared in a game since April 29 against the Chicago White Sox. In 8.1 innings this season, he’s posted a 4.32 ERA in seven games and has allowed opposing hitters to reach base at a .267 clip so this time off could be useful to reset the course of his season.

Injury updates on trio of Angels pitchers

The Angels made a focused effort this past offseason to shore up their pitching staff with the addition of veteran reliever Archie Bradley and other key additions, and they are also expecting the return of Griffin Canning after injuries halted his 2021 season.

Bradley and Jose Quijada, who was injured during the season, are both moving closer to their return, but Canning’s was slightly delayed when he was more sore than anticipated after facing live hitters.
