Chris Rodriguez looked like a budding star during his brief stint with the Los Angeles Angels in 2021 before shoulder inflammation cost him the final two months of the season.

The right-hander flashed three plus pitches and went 2-1 with a 3.64 ERA, 3.14 FIP and 1.45 WHIP in 29.2 innings of work (15 games, two starts).

Rodriguez underwent shoulder capsule surgery in October 2021 and was supposed to return to the mound last season, but suffered a setback and did not pitch at all.

Rodriguez has made good progress this spring and is scheduled to face hitters on Tuesday for the first time since his operation, per Jeff Fletcher of the Southern California News Group:

The Angels’ right-hander said he’s set to face hitters in live batting practice on Tuesday. It will be the first time he’s faced hitters since he was injured in 2021.

“I’m really excited with how things have come along,” Rodriguez said. “It’s great. I’m feeling really good. Taking steps in the right direction.”

That Rodriguez is close to pitching to batters bodes well for his chances of getting back on a Major League mound this season. If all goes well during his live batting practice session, he could potentially pitch in a simulated or exhibition game next week.

Rodriguez will likely begin the 2023 season on the injured list and spend some time with Double-A Rocket City and/or Triple-A Salt Lake before potentially rejoining the Angels later in the year.

Angels manager Phil Nevin confident Jared Walsh will improve against left-handed pitching

After struggling against left-handed pitching last season, Jared Walsh is finding more success against southpaws in Spring Training. He is 3-for-7 thus far and hitting an overall .367/.472/.567 with three doubles, one home run and four RBI in 12 Cactus League games.

Angels manager Phil Nevin wouldn’t commit to Walsh playing everyday at first base this season but is confident he will put up better numbers against left-handed pitching.
