Anthony Rendon has been out with yet another injury, and his absence for the Los Angeles Angels is felt by the lack of big-time at-bats with runners in scoring position.
The veteran has been on the injured list with a left groin strain since May 14. Initial results from Rendon’s MRI were very encouraging for the Angels and manager Phil Nevin.
Rendon’s start to the season has been perhaps his most productive with the club, but according to Jeff Fletcher of the O.C. Register, the All-Star doesn’t have a clear timeline to return, but they are hopeful it won’t be too long:
Third baseman Anthony Rendon (groin strain) still has not begun on-field activity, but Nevin said he still doesn’t expect Rendon to be out long. He would be eligible to return on Wednesday. “But hopefully it’s not much longer than that,” Nevin said. “He’s starting to progress and ramp up the things he’s doing inside.”
In 130 plate appearances, Rendon has a .301/.415/.369 slash with one homer and 20 RBI. Still in the heart of a seven-year, $245 million contract, his return to the team is incredibly necessary to their success. They are looking to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2014, and Rendon figures to be a key part in helping them get back.
The 32-year-old played in just 105 games from 2021 to 2022, and playing in 30 of the Angels’ first 40 games this season spelled good things for his availability in Nevin’s lineup. When he eventually returns, he should provide a boost to an already strong lineup.
Angels don’t expect Jared Walsh to have long-term implications
Jared Walsh had been dealing with insomnia and headaches that kept him out for nearly two months, and the recovery process was especially difficult. He described it as “Hell” and wasn’t sure what was happening to his body.
Walsh remains frustrated with his neurological issues but doctors assured him they won’t impact his career in the long term. He went 0-for-4 in his season debut against the Minnesota Twins, but for the 29-year-old, he is simply happy just to be back on the field.
