The Los Angeles Angels announced Anthony Rendon will miss the remainder of the season to undergo surgery on his right wrist and fix the issues that have plagued him throughout the season.

The surgery will repair a subluxation of a tendon in his right wrist, which will require a four to six month rehab period. The injury is essentially a dislocation of the tendon in his wrist, which is causing discomfort and inflammation.

This is the second straight season Rendon has been shut down due to injury after undergoing hip surgery last season. The veteran third baseman shared his disappointment to see another season wasted, via Jeff Fletcher of the O.C. Register:

“We have a great group of guys here and I didn’t want to do it two years in a row,” Rendon said on Friday. “Last year we were out of it. This year, I love this group of guys, going to battle with them every single day. That’s why I just kept trying to push through it and trying to fight through it as best as I could, and my body kept saying no.”

Rendon tried to play through the injury, which is something other players have done previously. However, he and the club decided the best option would be to take care of it now and get him healthy for next season:

“Yesterday was the last straw,” Rendon said. “We tried to go through a new routine. It was kind of the last thing we’re gonna do to try to figure out and see if I was able to play. Before the game. I was trying to see if I can get in the lineup. And then we did some more stuff during the game time, and it just wasn’t happening.”

Rendon is in the third year of a seven-year, $245-million deal and has yet to play a full season outside of the 2020 pandemic-shortened campaign. Although he was dealing with the injury, he remained somewhat productive, batting .228/.324/.383 with a 106 wRC+ and 1.0 WAR across 45 games.

Rendon is set to undergo the surgery early next week.

Rendon became leader in Angels clubhouse

Rendon has been trying to be a leader for the Angels, who have many young players, and wanted to install a winning mentality into all the players.

His veteran presence was also being noted by former Angels manager Joe Maddon, who was thankful to have the third baseman mentoring the younger players.
