The second update of phase 1 of the 2023 Major League Baseball All-Star Game voting has Los Angeles Angels stars Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani among the leaders at their respective positions.
The American League is riddled with familiar names, led by Ohtani, who’s on the ballot as a designated hitter and their current vote leader with 1,885,144 votes. In the National League, Atlanta Braves star right fielder, Ronald Acuña Jr. leads with 2,201,468 votes.
Ohtani has been named an All-Star twice in his career, including each of the last two seasons. He started on the mound for the AL in 2021 and earned the win, but opted not to pitch last year.
Trout is the second leading vote-getter among AL outfielders with 1,174,001 votes. New York Yankees’ outfielder Aaron Judge leads the outfield group with 1,584,254.
The Angels center fielder is a regular name in the Midsummer Classic. Trout has made the All-Star Game in every season since becoming a full-time starter in 2012, excluding the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.
In his first season with the Angels, Brandon Drury is ranks fourth among AL second basemen with 324,489 votes, behind Marcus Semien, Whit Merrifield and Jose Altuve.
The Angels continuing to play well will put them in position to be represented by not only their stars in Ohtani and Trout, but could see some lesser-known names make it to the All-Star Game.
Phase 2 will begin at 9:00 a.m. PT on Monday, June 26th, with fans voting among the finalists at each position during a four-day window that concludes at 9:00 a.m. PT on Thursday, June 29th. Later that night, the winners will be announced on ESPN at 4:00 p.m. PT.
Fans have the opportunity to vote once per day during this second phase of voting, with daily voting limits resetting each day at 9:00 p.m. PT. During Phase 2, vote totals will reset (i.e., vote totals from Phase 1 do not carry over) and the winner at each position (including three outfielders per League) will be named a starting position player for the 2023 Midsummer Classic.
