Drafted by the New York Yankees in the fourth round of the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft out of Murrieta Valley High School in Murrieta, Calif., Tyler Wade would make his debut in the majors in 2017.

After more than eight years in their organization, they traded him to the Los Angeles Angels prior to the 2022 season.

After breaking camp with the Angels, Wade saw a sizable amount of playing time, mainly at second base and shortstop with David Fletcher nursing an injured left hip. His month of April was quite surprising as he batted .304/.347/.370 in 53 plate appearances.

The Angels were receiving production from nearly every part of their lineup in the early weeks, which accounted for their hot start. Wade wasn’t hitting for power, but he was getting on base with a slew of singles.

But his bat would cool down significantly, as he posted a 37 wRC+ in May and it would continue through June, which led to him eventually being designated for assignment.

Wade was sent to Triple-A with the Salt Lake Bees, playing in just two games before being traded back to the Yankees on July 14.

He would post a .227/.353/.369 slash in the Yankees farm through the remainder of the regular season.

Tyler Wade 2022 highlight

Wade’s season highlight came on April 17 against the Texas Rangers after he went 2-for-4 with two singles, one RBI, a steal and one run scored. His RBI single in the top of the sixth inning that plated Andrew Velazquez brought the score to 6-3.

2023 outlook

Wade was signed by the Oakland Athletics on Dec. 20 to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training.

This is a great landing spot for the veteran infielder as he can see playing time, contingent on making the roster, due to the fact the A’s have a depleted club void of significant talent. On a club that lacks Major League experience as well, Wade should have the upper hand to make the team.

With the A’s likely having an uncompetitive roster in 2023, Wade could find himself on the trade block by the middle of the season if he plays well, and that could lead to him joining a contender as a bench piece.
