Entering his age-31 season for the Los Angeles Angels in 2022, Jack Mayfield needed to show more of an offensive push to maintain the need to keep him around, unfortunately, he would only last 23 games before being optioned down to Triple-A Salt Lake.

The Angels carried Mayfield on their active roster after breaking camp, and he appeared in 10 games from Opening Day through April 27. In that span he was decent, batting .281 with three extra-base hits and three runs batted in through 32 at-bats.

However, over his next 13 games, Mayfield fell into a horrific slump, posting a .105/.128/.105 slash with four hits (all singles) and 12 strikeouts to zero walks.

The Angels would send Mayfield down on June 19 and he wouldn’t be back with the big club for the rest of the regular season. The utilityman would battle injuries with the Bees and in 40 games during the remainder of their schedule he would log a .274 batting average including 18 extra-base hits, with five homers and 21 RBI.

Because of Mayfield’s extended status as a Minor League player and his many trips up and down from MLB, he exhausted his options. He was designated for assignment in November and he elected to enter free agency, ending his time with the Angels.

Jack Mayfield 2022 highlight

Mayfield’s best games came with the Bees on July 10, after he tallied three hits including a home run and two RBI. It was one of his six Minor League homers on the year.

2023 outlook

The now 32-year-old infielder has fallen off in recent years and is still without a club for the upcoming season, but because of his veteran status and ability to play multiple positions could be valuable for a team looking for some depth.

He would be likely to sign a Minor League deal if he does agree to a new contract, and he would also be a valuable piece for a team to have around in Spring Training. He could also choose to play at the international level in the hopes of rebounding and catching back on with a Major League club.
